“I feel way more energetic, very confident and happy that I can fit into my old clothes.”
Has anyone ever told you to cut down on desserts in order to prevent diabetes? Or that you should stop eating cultural foods because of your diabetes? Here are 5 common misconceptions you should know about type 2 diabetes.
🧬 #1: Type 2 diabetes is a genetic disease.
Many people often confuse type 1 diabetes, which is genetics-based, with type 2 diabetes, which is more influenced by lifestyle habits and environmental factors.
🍬 #2: Eating a lot of sugar causes diabetes.
Our body converts the sugar we eat into glucose, which is then used by our body as energy. Glucose causes our blood sugar to rise, but this doesn’t mean that eating sugar directly causes diabetes. However, a diet rich in sugar can lead to a higher waist circumference, which is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
🥗 #3: I need to go on a special diet.
Many people believe that they have to stop enjoying cultural foods and start a strict diet in order to manage their diabetes. In reality, diabetes can be managed as long as you have a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Hello Nutrition can help you create a meal plan that is tailored to your needs and includes all of your favorite foods.
🥐 #4: I have to avoid carbs.
Carbs is an essential nutrient that our body breaks down into glucose to use as energy, so we cannot cut out carbs completely. Diabetes is not about avoiding carbohydrates, but about choosing better carb options and controlling our portion size.
⭐️ #5: I don’t need to manage my blood sugars.
High blood sugars can lead to many complications such as eye damage, heart problems, and nerve damage. Having a working blood sugar monitor at home can help you manage your blood sugars more efficiently.
Diabetes is absolutely manageable and I love showing my clients how to practically balance their blood sugars, increase their energy and starting living their best life!
